Photoshop files question?

So the file format for Adobe Photoshop is .psd right? Well why is it that when I save a simple picture with minor editing, it is like 100mb in size? I mean the original jpeg before editing is like 3 mb for me. How does simple stuff such as cropping and such add almost 100 additional mb?

JPEG is a file compression format. A PSD file is uncompressed. If you used layers, flatten the image first, and then save as a JPEG. Or a TIFF if you want better quality.
