photoshop cs3 polygon lasso outlining tool?

when i use photoshop cs3 and im trying to outline a picture with the polygon lasso outlining tool the tool automatically connects it to the starting point when i dont want it to. like it cuts through the picture and automatically goes to the start point. do you get what im saying? well if you do, is there some way i can make it stop? like turn it off or something? cause its really frustrating me. and if i cant turn it off then can i like do something to stop it? please help!
 
The best way to select with the lasso is to use the regular lasso and outline the whole thing loosely. Then, pressing the control key or the shift key while selecting, you can add or subtract from the selection (you will see a plus or minus sign for add or subtract) until it's just right.
