Photography question - need help.?

Hey all, I have a photography assignment for school, but i have no idea what the question means.

Question 1:

"For this task you will present two self protraits which you will create in photoshop and Illustrator. The first will be a portrait from the shoulders up, using text and personal images to identify features and tonal areas.

1) How would it even be possible to define a tonal area... with another photo.... of yourself? That doesn't make sense to me, if it actually does, someone elaborate, please.

Question 2;

"The second will be an image or images of yourself created against background layers of images, swirls and swooshes about you. This is to be further develpoped in to a Syano Type print."

2) This question seems to make no sense at all.

Even if you don't understand the question, it would still be helpful for you to respond and tell me you don't understand it. Thanks

All this should have been covered in lecture. It is not strictly an assignment for a photographer, but a graphic artist. Photographers need to be more concerned with exposure, lighting and composure so they don't have to do anything using Photoshop but perhaps convert a file to black and white, process RAW files or append the metadata on the image files.

If you can, contact some of your fellow students or ask your instructor to be clearer in their instructions.
