Photography lighting for off camera.?

I have a rebel and I need a off camera light. I don't know how to describe what I want because I know very little about lighting. Yes I know read a book well I am in a class and need some quick answers.

I think what I need is a hot shoe light one that fits onto my camera. I want to use it in a studio to light up portraits or closeups in a wedding setting. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
 
If you want light in a studio setting I would recommend an umbrella lamp but these aren't cheap so it's worth shopping around for a good deal x
