Photography.. I have been shown where my exposure compensation button is today...

...but i dont know why its there.? I was shown as i have a Nikon D40 which wont autobracket for HDR shots, so i was shown how to tke one photo normal then one 2 stops eaither side using the exposure compenstion button...

What else would i use it for. Im sure it wasn't put there just for HDR.
 
Its put there because the meter assumes a middle grey and often that will not get you the exposure you want. In fact there are many times that the meter is wrong because your photo is not 18% grey. An example would be shots taken under a bright sky on snow. So exposure compensation lets you set the meter so it sets exposure values as if there is more or less light than the meter is seeing
