This may not be as spcific as you'd like but I would search the web for any info on "Composition", "Exposure" and "Available Light" with a + photography after it. Read as much as you can. Look for books on the subject at your library. Take your camera and try to apply ONE thing at a time until you have a good understanding of it. Learning how to compose your photo and use the light are going to be big first steps. Even if you're shooting on Auto. Then move on to Exposure and start making photos instead of taking photos.
