photography help needed?

hai folks, i am new to photography, i have a sony cybershot camera with 7.2 mp/ iso 1200 / 3x zoom, now i took few phots and i did not satisifed with it. i need your help. say a bird in a tree located around 100 feet height. so now i zoom to 3x to bring as much closer the bird as i can and if take the photo and if i look at the photo is not sharp enought, i can see dots in that. so my question is, in this situations, how to get a best photograph of that bird? i mean what camera settings you recommend?
 
Well for starters you have a camera that is great for your experience, but on how i know is that you should try to avoid the digital zoom. Try finding a hiding spot that is close to where the bird always goes. If that doesn't work, try getting a camera that has more Megapixels and more optical zoom(the best kinds are the ones with more and 8 megapixels and with 10x optical zoom or over)
