I am interested in taking up photography on the side to help bring in some extra income. I am purchasing the Nikon D5000 or the D90, so I am hoping that one of these will be sufficient as a starter camera. A friend is getting married in September and I offered to take additional photos and put them in a slide show for her and email them. Though she is paying $1600 for her photographer, I hope to use the photos that I able to take as a true 1st lesson on wedding photography and add it to my portfolio if they come out nice. The is a gentleman who's website is full of wedding photography and if I can take photos as nice as his (he only does it as a hobby, no formal training) then all I need is a lighting set-up and I can do the same. Does anyone have any pointers for me or am I potentially waisting my time and money investing a these types of cameras?
Wow, thank you. Can you really just go to a wedding and take photos if you are not invited? I would never jump into something without practicing first, I just need some form of fulfillment in my life and my current job offers me no satisfaction outside of a paycheck to cover my mortgage. I do know that it will take a while to get accustomed to the camera and whether I can actually capture quality photos. Once again, thank you for all the advice.

You shouldn't jump in to something as stressful as wedding photography, at least before you know what your skill level is

wedding photography is extremely stressful, and the bride and groom are counting on YOU to capture their wedding. When/if you are the primary photographer, your photos will be almost the only thing they have to show for their wedding in the future, so its important that a wedding photographer is comfortable and competent

I'm not trying to scare you or talk you out of pursuing this, I'm just suggesting you don't jump in to it too quickly...

it sounds like you're a new photographer, and before any couple hires you to shoot their wedding, they'll probably request a portfolio first anyway, so at this point the best thing for you to do is get comfortable with your camera, and try shooting as many weddings you can (even if you're not invited ;) )
