Honestly, the best camera I can recommend for the budget you seem to have would be the Canon Rebel XTi.

10.1 MP, fully manual capabilities but also auto... capable of changing lenses and many other things.

It's 649.99 but its the best Entry Level Pro-sumer photography camera.

I personally own this camera, and I could not ask for more. It's great and allows me to do everything I need to do.

I do photography for my local newspaper, also for friends and family (including portraits, weddings, events...). It is truly a great camera.

Pros not only use DSLR's like the Nikon D3 and Canon 1Ds Mark III, the also use 35mm SLR's, medium format cameras and view cameras .. in order to have the knowledge and skills necessary to use these cameras and know when to use which one, a certain amount of education is necessary ... without it, both you and your clients will become frustrated with your results.

Start using a good used Nikon or Canon 35mm SLR and take at least a couple of classes ... then decide if you have the determination and personality necessary to be a successful photographer.

Here is a good link that will show you what is expected of pro photographers.

I would have to agree, the Canon rebel xti is the best. I've been using mine for over a year, I just love it.

If by "becoming a photographer" you mean getting paid for it, what camera to buy is the least of your worries.

You'll need to go to school for a few years or apprentice with a pro.

Buying a camera only makes you a camera owner -- not a photographer.
