Phone with PDA functions?

I have a PDA though I honestly don't use it to it's full potential... and it's also rather old.

I am looking for a phone that also functions as a PDA. Unless I am mistaken, this basically means that it is running Windows Mobile? The MAIN part of that is I want to be able to install my GPS software so I don't have to lug around my PDA whenever I want to use that feature. Because of this alone, it would need to have large internal memory of an expansion slow supporting at least a 2GB card.

I DO NOT CARE AT ALL about a camera. I also really want but do not 100% NEED WiFi...

Lots of phones do basic PDA functions these days, but what you want is a *insert angelic chorus* Smartphone.

Ok, first thing, is the GPS a seperate device? Or are you looking for something integrated with the device you'll be buying?


Second, the large majority of Smartphones run either Windows Mobile or Symbian S60v3. Either one will work, and they each have their high points (and high fanboys, haha!).

Before someone else says it, the Nokia N95 is a very powerful Symbian S60v3 device with built in GPS, and WiFi. It's a GSM phone that'll work with T-Mobile, AT&T, Dobson CellOne, or any other GSM carrier. It's also quite expensive, and doesn't support 3G data speeds in the USA.

There are lots of other smartphones with WiFi capability out there...HTC has the Excalibur and Vox (plus a couple new ones that just came out) as well as several touchscreen models with side-slide keyboards.

Most of the Nokia models are slider-phone type formfactors without QWERTY keyboards, but they're highly regarded devices.
 
I do have a bluetooth GPS receiver (BT-338). I could definitely continue using it but it would also be more convenient to have something built in. However, I guess that might be on the higher-end phones which probably have other stuff, which probably jacks up the price plenty

Small form factor would be a HUGE plus and maybe deciding factor, because I currently own the RAZR because it fits in my pockets SO easily. Something so long or thick just doesn't work for a girl
 
I notice HTC's phones are 200Mhz... I run my Axim at 624Mhz which is GREAT for the GPS... I can't imagine how slow it must run @ 200Mhz.. hmm
 
Slim, not so big? Check out the HTC Excalibur (also known as the T-Mobile Dash) and the HTV Vox S710 (there's also a 3G variant, I think the S740?). The S710 and 740 are a little thick, but they have a side-slide QWERTY keyboard. All of them have WiFi

The Samsung Blackjack does NOT have WiFi, but it's a slimmer, more petite option than the HTC Excalibur. Also, the Nokia E61i should be worth a look: it competes directly with the HTC Excalibur (exact same formfactor and similar features, including WiFi). Some consider it kind of a slab-ish device, but it's very high quality.

Just as a tip: smartphones and pockets typically don't mix. it's very difficult to get them small enough. The Cingular 3125 is about the slimmest one out there, and it doesn't have 3G, or WiFi, or a QWERTY keyboard. Petite and QWERTY don't mix either.

S60v3, just to let you know, tends to be much easier on the CPU as opposed to Windows Mobile.
 
I never had any problem using TomTom 5/6 and a Holux GPSlim236 bluetooth GPS receiver with my MDA (TI OMAP 850, 195Mhz).

If you want WM, get the Kaiser (when it's released) or the HTC P3600. Both has built-in GPS chip.

IF you want S60v3, get the 6110 Classic, which also has GPS chip built-in.
 
I use HTC Artemis with built-in GPS reciever and TomTom6 and my 200mhz processor works flawlessly. Till date its not crashed while using GPS even once.
 
I would also consider HP's IPAQ69xx series. It has a 3" display fast processor, 416mhz and built in gps chip, wi-fi and bt all in candy bar style form. The only draw back is hp will not release wm6 for it but if you don't mind that it works great! I've been using it for the past 5 months and it has been pretty reliable phone. Good luck
