Phone to use in Africa...

Hi, i need to buy a phone for my younger brother who is currently in Nigeria. I got a Sony ericsson Z520i a while ago but it stopped working. I know it uses a different bandwidth(is that the word?). What kind of phones do you guys recommend? Im not sure why the z520 got messed up....I know sony ericsson is like a good brand but i dont want to try em again.
