Phone for travel to Botswana

I am travelling to Botswana through Johannesburg, South Africa - flying into SA and driving north to Gabarone. I wanted to know if anyone knew of a way to get a phone to call the states with. I am considering looking for a prepay phone in the airport in SA but since I'm not guaranteed (and I don't know if it would work in both countries anyway) I'd like to see if anyone had any suggestions.

Any tri or quad band GSM phone will work. Make sure its unlocked so you can buy prepaid sim cards when you are abroad. Choose a phone with very good battery life as you may be without access to electricity for some periods of time with no chance to charge the phone, I would turn it off unless you are going to make a call.

Thank you! Do you have any suggestions for where to purchase? Do you think I can pick one up in the airport - either Frankfurt Germany - long layover or Johannesburg?

I would imagine you could pick them up at the airport, but having never travelled to those places, I can't say.
