philips tv model number 42pfl3603d/f7 volume issues?

just the other the day i noticed that my direct tv remote wasnt working to adjust the volume on my philips tv. the tv powers on and off every time but the adjusting the volume doesnt always work. the weird thing is when i point the remote on either side of the television the remote works fine??? i currently have duracel batteries in the remote but i didnt think that would matter because i get a strong response when i use every other function on the remote. i also can see the tv volume reacting to the remote because occasionally i can see the white dot on front of the tv blink when i hit the volume button. im stumped any help would be appreciated.thanks
