Philips DVD Recorder has Stopped Recording Properly. Help, please?

My Philips DVDR3480, which has been recording normally for the past few months on its current setup has stopped recording properly. It recorded properly last week, but today it didn't. Nothing has changed since then. All the SCART leads are in the same place as they have been for months and the DVD recorder still has the same settings as it did then. However, recording as of yesterday has stopped working properly. When I press record, everything is as it should be; a recording timer starts and continues until I hit stop. When I hit stop, an update occurs as it normally does. However, whenever I go to the disc menu the recording I have made is there, but when I select it, instead of playing, a black screen instead appears, the timer on the DVDR goes blank and a X's occasionally flash on the screen. When I take the disc out, the recording deletes itself. If I try to finalise the disc, it fails and the DVDR subsequently is unable to load the disc at all and instead makes horrible whirring and buzzing noises for about 5 minutes. Normal DVD Playback is fine. It can play DVDs properly, both purchased and self-recorded. I have also tried to record on a few different discs, so it's a problem with the Recorder, not the disc.
So. Is there anything anyone can suggest I do to resolve this problem, or does it sound like my DVDR is completely broken and I need to buy a new one? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PS. I do have a Sky+ Box, but I would much prefer to record my favourite shows onto DVD. Just a personal preference.
