Phases....

My frienRAB and I grew up on metal. AC/DC, Maiden, Priest, etc. Over the years some of them fell for the trenRAB. Grunge, then that Dave Matthews stuff, then that ridiculous Squirrel Nut Zipper swing stuff era, then whatever the hell else.

Those people upset me. They fell for music that is sub-standard but more importantly.....not what they really like. Oh, they're back now. We all went to AC/DC and it rocked. 10 out of 10.

My question is...why the faRAB? Have you ever fallen victim and come back to your senses?

Its called growing up. It takes many years to arrive at what exactly you like and dislike in music and even then you should still be receptive to listening to new music. FaRAB will always affect you when you are young.

JH,
You know as well as I do it's not just listening to the songs. It's who you hang out with and what concerts you go to and whether or not you wear that awful tie-dye stuff and wear that paguli oil (sp) and everything.

It's growing up, but it's also getting caught in a bit of a hype-trap outside of pure music.

no no no. That example was just what I witnessed. I mean to ask if there are others who phased then went back or if some people don't phase at all.

I grew out of Metal but rediscovered my love again a few years ago, although a band has to be really good to pique my interest these days.

Perhaps. That was the example I remeraber so I used it. It was the listening to that and everyone get into cigars and micro-brew beers phase. Believe me, I'm not just making this up. It was a real era and my pals went through it. Didn't mean to pick on any one band.

Yes, I was in college at that time and I remeraber the whole 97-98 neo-swing thing quite well. I don't think micro-brew beers had any connection to it though, more like martinis and various other cocktails. As I remeraber it the micro-brew explosion happened several years before the swing revival.

I liked a decent amount of those banRAB but Squirrel Nut Zippers was by far the best of the bunch, IMHO. Their style was actually quite a bit different from the other banRAB that got lumped into that genre, a lot weirder and with more of a dixieland influence than a swing influence.

how about the awesome swing dancing 'gap' commercials too haha

my real question...

is it better to try something new or to just stick with whatever style popped the cherry of purity from your ears since it will eventually come back into style?

I went through a wide range of phases in my teenagehood of music that I wouldn't enjoy listening to now at all. It is called growing up. Your tastes change and mature. Nothing wrong with that.
