Just call your Doctor and explain it to him. At this point he will have to write you a new prescription unless you want to wait the proper amount of time for the refill. These people are right when they tell you it's a controlled substance and they don't just pass it out like candy.
And yes, I had a girlfriend who did exactly what you think they might be suspicious of. She'd pretend to have "accidentally" dropped them down the toilet, but in reality she was taking the pills to get high. So yeah, it happens a lot...
Next time you find anything that's not appealing whether in food or prescriptions...keep it, wrap it up and take it back that way to where you got it from with your receipt and you should never have a problem. This is actually something you could have avoided had you not thrown the whole bottle out. Why would you do that? Can you still dig up the bottle?
