Pets and thunder storms.....?

It is thunder/lightning storming here where i live and i was wondering if it is safe to let my dog outside to go to the bathroom? I am really afraid that he will get struck by lightning or something...it is like really big bolts of lightning(lights up the whole sky) i'm not so much worried about him getting wet because i can dry him off but is it safe to let him out?
he can't run off, yard is fenced in.
 
Count the lightning and thunder. If the thunder comes immediately after the lightning, the lightning is too close. If there's are a few seconds... even five or ten, the lightning is farther off and you're probably safe.

BUT, why not just wait for the storm to pass? It's usually just a few minutes.

Go out with him on a leash and stay away from trees. He probably wont get struck, but he may become frighted and run off.
