Wondering if anyone could give me some advice for a family memeber who is having problems with the medicine dosages.

They have been on Pethadine forthe past 15yrs which we only recently found out was way over the time period you should be using this drug; as a result their doctor has quickly changed them to Morphyne.
The problem is they seem to really be struggling with the change over, having wild mood swings, breaking out in sweats, feeling sick, diarrhea and confusion.
NOw I'm not sure if it's the change to Morphyne or the lack of Pethadine that is causing this, but we are really looking to see if there is an alternative.
The Doctors' wont put them back on Pethadine, despite being 60y/o but they really seem to be struggling with teh Morphyne which I belive causes more damage than Pethadine.

Any ideas of anything we could suggest to the doctors???

Hello Mark,

Welcome :) Pethadine is alot stronger than morphine so the side effects are most likely withdrawal, as your family meraber has dramatically decreaed the amount of opiates in his/her system.

I would strongly suggest you call the prescribing doctor and explain the situation. Perhaps you can request something stronger for a short period, with a taper plan so your family meraber can gradually wean down to the right dose of morphine.

Hope this helps.

Good luck,
emsmom
