Personality characteristics peculiar to those in high public office, politicians etc?

Are there any studies on this? An event in the news has piqued my curiosity. It seems that a great many high-ranking politicians and others are caught in crimes and escapades no ordinary person would dare risk.
Even politicians I thought I had liked have been caught in serious scandals; this behavior seems to pervade high office regardless of political affiliation.
Are there some special personality characteristics of "successful" politicians that make them more likely to be caught with their pants down or with their hands in the cookie jar?

Interesting question, as I have always thought there was something slightly sociopathic about people in those positions. Maybe a little bit of narcissism thrown in for good measure. There definitely does seem to be something they all have in common.
