Permanently disable yahoo chat to always use messenger?

I prefer yahoo messenger, but yahoo chat keeps automatically signing in without me enabling it. Which is then signing me out of messenger. It is becoming frustrating! Is there something I can do to make yahoo chat stay offline permanently? Or atleast until "I" enable it?
Just fyi, Messenger starts up automatically when my computer is powered on. I NEVER sign into yahoo chat. I periodically check my mail, (which states "offline" by the way) and soon or later messenger alerts me that I have been signed out because I've signed into chat. Which I have not done.
 
You can't completely remove the Chat feature from your Mail page----BUT you can disable it so it doesn’t sign you in when you go to Mail, nor interfere with other normal functions.
With the mail page open, look for the IM contact list on the left hand side.
Click where your status says “Available” and THEN select “Sign out of Chat”. This will disable the feature.

Yes, the little blue box is still on the page under the trash---but it's disabled,-- until (and/or IF) you choose to reactivate it.
