Anyone else seen this? Its been dubbed as the new 'harry potter' by some critics but its a lot weaker IMHO.
It seems to revolve around some of the same basic principles of potter - ordinary kid turns out to have extraordinary parents, special school for his kind, star pupil at said school- but the storyline is much weaker. It was saved by some good special effects and a bit of light humour. Overall I would give it 6/10 or 3/5 or 60% or 3 stars out of 5

I prefered it to the original. I can see why it's compared to Harry Potter but they are entirely different. Yes they are both boys, yes one is a wizard, the other a Demi God.
Harry Potter is an story that has more depth to it, but people are basing that on the series of books compared to just this one Percy book.

Having seen both films I prefered this because it didn't come with so much baggage. I think the story works better. I don't agree the story was weaker. The actual story of the first Potter film isn't that great. The film is saved by the magical feel and epic scale of Hogwarts. I recently watched it again and found I couldn't get into it like I had previously. As we are now 6 films into the series it looks old and dated already and rather slow.
As things stand if they said they are making a sequel to this I would be more interested in seeing that than the next Potter film which I feel I am going to see more because I have seen the rest so may as well see it to the end than actually being enthusiastic and excited by it.
I think had there not been the Potter films to compare too it would have got better reviews.
