Percocets

Hey everyone, I was recently perscribed to percocets for a minor surgery, taking 2-3 a day, one pill at a time. Tonight the pain was a little more than I wanted to deal with and took two. The effects were noticable. I was wondering if it was normal to experience some feelings of depersonalization when trying to fall asleep. I took them at about 7 pm and attempted to go to sleep at 1230. I was lying awake, very tired but unable to fall asleep. When I close my eyes I feel very surreal, almost like Im watching myself doing things or as if Im dreaming but Im still awake. I have enough background in psychology to understand these are symptoms of depersonalization and was just wondering if this was a normal effect of percocets? Thanks.

definitely a side-effect, especially if you take more than you are supposed to! I learned that lesson the hard way when I was on Vicoden once and took two instead of one, since one wasn't working. It STILL didn't get rid of the pain, but I was very "out if it" mentally. I recommend sticking to the proper dosage.

in most cases with surgery and taking percocets, the usual dose instruction is take one to two every four to six hours for pain. so realistically she was not taking more than what is usually recommended, espescially when surgery is involved. sounds like the pain was worse so she went with the two that time instead of just the one?

the same thing you are describing as your reaction to the two is the very same reaction i had when i was given the first ever shot in the butt of morphine while in the hosp? it was supposed to help me sleep, but in my case it scared the hell outta me and put me into some insane trancelike state? i was just soo afraid to even close my eyes since it really felt to me for some reason that if i fell asleep i was not going to wake up. that was with MS, but anyones individual reaction to any narcotic or any given med actually is very highly individual at best. its just our bodys physiology and some other factors that simply all play into how any med will make us feel. incidentlly, what you described here as your reaction is the same as what i can get with certain types of cold meds i have bought OTC over the years?

if this occured ONLY when you took the two together then it may be best to try if you can to just go with the one at a time or take only one then wait til about two hours in, only because two at a time is part of the 'normal' dose for more severe pain, and take the second one then if you really just are having that much pain? that WOULD be allowable as long as it all is within what the recommended max at a time amount truely is. just always keep in mind that any reaction/side effect is just a possible with just about any meds we take.

one other thing that has ALWAYS helped me with post op pain is just using plain old ice. this really does help tons with alot of different types of post op surgical pain, mostly since alot of the pain is from basic inflammation and trauma to the surrounding tissues? ice just really works great on this type of pain, no matter what actually creates it to begin with. just a good suggestion that really can help. hope things heal okay for you. Thanks a lot for your responses, it helps me to know Im not alone in feeling that way. When I was awake and concious I felt fine, the sedative effects were noticable and my emotions were actually quite positive. As soon as I tried to fall asleep however I started to feel weird, it was as if I was watching myself fall asleep, and seemed as if I had started dreaming even though I knew I was still awake. Thanks again for the help.
