People Who Have Let You Down

Are there any directors or producers who you've always loved their work, but ended up being let down greatly by their other works?

An example would be Jerry Seinfeld making Bee Movie, or Spielburg's other cartoon works besides Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, etc, like Monster House.

Well, I don't really have any "let down" moments as more as a reversed process. Craig McCracken's work on Powerpuff Girls didn't interest me that much. But when I saw Foster's, I became very interested in his work.

Same with Seth MacFarlane. I didn't care that much for him when I saw Family Guy, but after seeing American Dad, looked him up and became interested in his other work.

Butch Hartman, after the third season of FOP. Some think he merely got distracted by Danny Phantom; I suspect he was trying to imitate his buddy Seth McFarlane (probably after he found out that adults watched FOP too), which is why FOP suddenly lost its charm and became a mean-spirited Wanda-bashing snarkfest, IMO.

Warner Brothers, after they let their classic Looney Tunes characters star in such disgraces as Space Jam and Back In Action. Space Jam is especially onerous; I mean, Michael Jordan and Bugs team up in one commercial to sell sneakers, and suddenly they're co-starring in a major motion picture. Feh. You could see corporate greed oozing from every frame of that film.

Michael Eisner, after he let good movies like Lion King become TV crapola like Timon and Pumbaa. Not to mention all those direct-to-DVD cheapquels. Yay for Mickey for kicking the scoundrel out.

The gang behind World of Quest for coming up with some of the best character design I've seen in TV toons, not to mention a great voice cast, and then marring it with tired jokes and misdirected, threadbare plots. *sigh* Hurts to see such potential wasted...

Both Joe Murray and Everett Peck come to mind. Joe Murray created Rocko's Modern Life, one of my favorite cartoons as a kid (and still love now) but currently, he's made that pile known as Camp Lazlo. Everett Peck made Duckman, a great cartoon that I recently started watching but he wasted his talents on the incredibly lame Squirrel Boy. It does make me wonder: what happened with these two guys?

You stole mine. :p

Rocko's Modern Life and Duckman were incredible shows and to see their talents degenerate into such.... Average, generic, mediocrity is confounding. To say the least.

The morons at Fox who cancelled Family Guy and replaced it with American Dad, but learned their lesson through DVD sales and brought it back.

Possibly the granddaddy of let-downs; John K. Before APC, it seemed like John was the most admirable figure in animation, fighting against the corporate machine to do the best work possible.

APC tuned out to be a cesspool of Ralph Bakshi-esque self indulgence, it got cancelled instantly And a completely new side of John came about, the one that most people are disdainful towards, including me.

That and the fact that both creators wanted their new shows to more kid friendly. I know for a fact that Camp Lazlo was supposed to be a children's book before Murray changed his mind, but I don't know about Squirrel Boy.

The last season of Rugrats,I hated Chuckie's new voice.A lot of the ideas seemed like just what they got off the top of their head.Seriously,a real bust to such a treasurable childhood favorite.

As has been said, Joe Murray for giving us the brilliant Rocko's Modern Life and then getting me excited about his new project, Camp Lazlo, which turned out to be nothing worth watching.

Another would be Craig McCracken. I loved the Powerpuff Girls but I just don't feel much at all towards Foster's. In my opinion it's just not that special and it really could have been.

A pre-emptive one in here for Brad Bird if he goes ahead with a sequel to The Incredibles. Otherwise put me in for the Disney cheapquels. As for Joe Murray, so he went for a different style of show. Can't blame him for that, but he was also operating in a different environment. Remember, Rocko was TV Y when it came out; Lazlo was TV Y7. Wouldn't you think they should be the other way around?

You wern't the only who was terrified of John K's new style.

Also I'm not a fan Of Seth McFarland's work for obvious reasons.

Yeah, what the frick got into him? Ren and Stimpy reached an apex of quality, and then he pushes them right into the muck. And right now, he's putting together a show based on the revolting John Liquor character (according to his blog, which I visit now and then). There's no way I'd watch that. I just don't understand what's happened to him.

Definitely Joe Murrey. Rocko was one of my favorite cartoons growing up and still is. When I heard he was working on a new project for Cartoon Network I was excited only to be let-down by Camp Lazlo. It's boring, unfunny, uninteresting, and none of the characters are particularly likable.

I have to agree with Craig McCracken too. Foster's was alright, I guess, but nowhere near as brilliant as The Powerpuff Girls. It had potential as the concept itself was great, but it never really was as good as it could have been.

I'd also have to say Brendon Small. I adore Home Movies. It's one of my favorite cartoons ever made. Metalocalypse, Brendon Small's latest creation, just doesn't do it for me. I've tried to get into it on numerous occasions but have yet to be "grabbed." There have been a couple episodes that had entertained me enough to watch the whole thing, but I never go out of my way to watch it.

It also could be because he's not working with Loren Bouchard. Those two were a great team on Home Movies and looking at the two's recent outings, they seem to be missing something important.

Oh, right, I forgot Loren was behind Lucy. That's another show I've tried to get into but just can't seem to care about it at all.

Stan: Get your Hanes on. Lace up your Nikes. Grab yours Wheaties & your Gatorade, and we'll pick up a Big Mac on the way to the ballpark.

I don't detect any coporate greed from that dialogue.:D So maybe you're exaggerating a bit?

Butch Hartman let me down alot after he left for danny phantom I agree there.

as for joe murray, yeah a bit of a let down for me too. Camp Lazlo is yes, no where near the quality of rocko's modern life. But IMHO, I liked camp lazlo. It wasn't a great cartoon, it was ok. It wasn't intended to be the same humor style as rocko's modern life. Joe Murray was just taking a different direction with the show by depicting childhood.

John k: He made Ren and Stimpy which was amazing. But then we get Ren and stimpy the adult party cartoon which bombed and the ripping friends. It was just.. what the heck happened!?
