People aren't obliged to answer your questions. By avoiding them, they are letting you know they don't want to answer...either they, or you, are likely to not like the answer. It's also clear they don't want to lie about it either though.
If you choose to push the issue (and I sometimes do as well) be prepared to not like the answer. There's a reason they are avoiding telling you...
