Pen tool on photoshop help pleaseeeeee? :)?

Okay. I'm trying to use this damn pen tool in photoshop, and i need it to make a path for text to go on the top, but whenever i use it, its drawing stupid shapes of colour instead??? I hate this tool so much haha
