PDA/Smartphone, Crackberry need not apply

My husband has a Palm Treo 700W, and has been quite happy with it for around 4 years. For several reasons, he is looking to upgrade, and he loathes Blackberry.

We are currently with Verizon, and are not unhappy with anything about them *except* their lack of international service, as he travels out of the country several times a year. It'd be nice if he could use his phone.

I've looked at the Motorola Backflip & the iPhone with AT&T, or the Droid at Verizon, but even after reading reviews here and elsewhere, cannot come to a good decision--the plans/pricing are very similar, so it's really a matter of how well the phones work.

He requires his phone to, first and foremost, be able to make and receive calls without dropping them. Some other requirements are:
  • Microsoft and Adobe document viewing
  • Language translation software/app
  • Decent battery life
  • effective screen lockout while on a call
  • no butt dialing

Any suggestions from the experts?

People will rag on AT&T for the whole iPhone dropped calls thing, but if they get good coverage in your area you'll be fine. And the phones are internationally capable.

If not, the Droid/Eris on Verizon, or the Nexus1 on either carrier.
