PC Volume randomly boosted?

Today i got back home, turned on the computer as usual, it is a Dell (i know -__-) with the Dell 5.1 stereo system, put the volume to 1/3rd of the way (as per usual), and left it to boot up while i did some things. When i returned an hour later I started iTunes, and played my music but the volume was incredibly loud (aprox. 200% louder than it should be). I was using it this morning and the volume was no problem, it was perfect. However to set it at a comfortable volume i had to use the volume control center to put it down to like 10% and now it is normal volume. The problem is, how has it changed volume settings itself? As nothing different was done than my typical routine. The problem cannot be with the computer because headphones are fine.
EDIT: I have restarted computer. Tested the volume on multiple players such as youtube, wmp, winamp (iTunes not the problem)
