pc to tv problems no picture?

I would like to view my pc on the tv, ive put a vga cable from them but when i go to the pc mode on my tv the screen is blank and only says NO SYNC i checked my tv instructions and it says the resolution should be 640/480 to work with a pc, but my pc wont allow me to go lower than 800 pixels, my tv is a sony bravia,what can i do,thanks
