PC headset to xbox 360?

this setup doesn't work...

xbox controller <--> 3.5mm to 2.5mm adapter <--> 3.5mm splitter <--> headset with mic.

i set this up and i played on xbox live last night, but i couldn't hear anything, except for a faint scratchy noise, is it in settings or something?? or is there something wrong with my setup??
 
If the PC headset you're using requires drivers it won't work. Most PC headsets require drivers that are installed from a disk. Since you can't install software like that to a 360's hard drive, those types of headsets won't work. You should try a gaming headset that says it's compatible with the 360 like the Turtle Beach or Plantronics lines.
