PC Doesn't "See" Palm, anymore!

OK, I found out, after running a download, that I screwed up... Here's what happened:

I used to have a Zire71. After a few years (with an iPaq in-between), I bought a TX. I never uninstalled the Zire stuff, but installed my TX stuff. All my old info carried over. I thought all was well, until I went into my Programs list and saw two different Palm folders, with "Hotsync" in each one. I figured I must not have a clean install, so I used Windows' Add/Remove to delete all of the software off my system (Yeah, I know that that's not the right way, now!). I then re-installed, added the updated download from Palm for Desktop software, and then couldn't communicate once I tried to sync via my cable (though I was able to update via infrared!). During the update, I noted an option to "remove Palm software", so I decided that that must be the clean way to do it, and figured I'd start all over. So, I removed software via the tool, re-installed only the software on my CD, manually re-started my PC, connected my Palm, got a message that a new device was found ("Palm"), hit sync, and got no connection. I restarted the next day (today), and still get no connection.

Can someone help me figure out what I need to do?
 
There are two files that control the USB connection:

PalmUSBD.inf

Palmusbd.sys

My suggestion is to search all folders for these two files and delete all instances of them.

Then attempt a hot sync - you may get the Windows "new" hardware found and it will reinstall them in the "best" location. Or it may not. This will depend upon which SP pack is on your Windows and if you loaded XP via an update or a full install. It's no biggey if it doesn't do it automatically.

If it doesn't - then unistall again - turn the PC off for 1 minute - then reinstall the software a last time and be certain to pick the correct user name.

This process will normally fix the issue - unless by chance you are syncing to an obscure Dell Latitude Laptop via a Port Replicator where the replicator USB hub doesn't have enough voltage to trigger the connection (which I doubt since your Zire sync'd to the same computer?).
 
Thanks, Moose Man. I'll give that a try. It's possible that I might have screwed up the USB part because I hooked up my Palm and hit the sync button, THEN saw the found new hardware, Palm installed. Could have chunked that.

I'll look for the files, delete, hook up, and chill until the computer says I'm good to go.

And yes, same computer I used to hook my Zire up to (HP NC6000... Lovely machine!).
 
UPDATE: Moose Man's suggestions worked! Yay! I found the cause of the problems to be the install of the latest Hotsync Manager from Palm. Once I loaded that, I lost the ability to connect (I've been through this several times, now!).
