Paying credit card in a restaurant?
hi, i dont go out much and i dont go to alot of restaurants, and i know you pay 10~15 percent in tips (is it? and how much do YOU tip?) but when i pay with a credit card, how do u tip?

one time i didnt even tip cause i was using a credit card and i didnt know how. i just went to the cashier and she swiped the card, asked me to sign, and taht's it. is that it? how was i supposed to tip?

and i notice sometimes, when other customers eat beside me, they get the bill and use a credit card. they set the card on the bill and they take it, and brings it back to the customer. he signs it, and they take the signed paper..... uh.... did he tip? if so how?

The best way is to tip in cash, because the restaurant will deduct tax from any tips left by credit card.

Failing that, there are two ways. One system asks you to tip before you give the card, another after.

When you get your bill, look at it. If there's a section that says "tip" on the receipt, write in the tip amount and then do the math and write the total (tip and bill) on the line that says total. Then put down your card. They'll add it for you and charge the total amount to your credit card.

If there is no place to do writing on the bill, then just give them your card. You'll get two slips back (one to sign, one to take). On the one you sign, there will be a blank line or space next to "Tip". Write in the tip amount, bring down the total (add it to the bill), and write the grand total in the appropriate place. Sign it. Leave the merchant copy and go on your merry way. You'll be billed for the full amount (but if you go and look at your statement/card activity immediately, you'll probably only see the bill amount at first... it takes awhile for the tip amount to go through).

Hope that helps.

Usually you just double the tax on your overall bill - that would be the tip.

However, sometimes you tip based off their customers service. It really just depends.

When you give them your credit card, write in the amount on the receipt (there's a part on the receipt that says "TIP:" and just write in your amount.

It's easy! Or you can do it in cash if you prefer it that way by writing "cash" and the tip amount.

: )

On the credit card slip, there's a line to add the tip into your bill. Then you total your tip and food price on the last line. This would be how much you will be charged. I usually just pay for credit card and leave the tip in cash if I have cash. If not, I'll just add the tip into the food price. I give at least 15% but mostly 20%. I think 20% is the standard tip amount.

Just ask the server or cashier to add a tip to your bill. It is really bad to not tip and if you return to that restaurant you may not get very good service. If you are going to high-end restaurants they can actually refuse to serve you if you repeatedly do not leave a tip and they remember you.

We always tip in cash so that the server gets it right away. If you tip on your card, he or she must wait to receive it. Tip 15-20% of the bill. If you've used a coupon, base your tip on the amount it would have been without the coupon. In some restaurants, the server takes your payment to the register. In others, you take your check and pay at the register on the way out. Either way, leave your tip on the table when you leave.

There's a part on the credit card slip where you can write in a tip, and then add it to the total.

Or you can write "cash" in that part of the bill, and then just leave the tip in cash.
