Paul Newman, leftist?

I really enjoyed Paul Newman as an actor; he was a true legend. I greatly admired his philanthropy, too. But was anyone else as bothered as me by his ultra-liberal politics? He seemed so down-to-earth, but obviously lacked any real judgment as an American.
