I apologise now if I have posted this in the wrong area, I wasn't sure as it's a back pain issue which is causing 2 problems.

Since my partner's back injury sex has been almost impossible, although we have found that we can have sex if I am careful on top of him. This is frustrating as we have gone from having sex all the time to now and again if his pain isn't too bad.

His injury is his lower back region, quite low down which seems to be effecting his bladder behaviour, he will wake in the night, and has to go immediately, he cannot hold it for more than a minute or so poor thing. He's so erabarrassed about this as it has suddenly come on since the injury. I have managed to get him a male urinater for in the night if he wakes up desperate which he hates using but sometimes has to.

Although he will discuss this with the doctor, and he may have to have back surgery, but is this bladder thing common in back injuries, I am assuming there is pressure from swelling etc that presses on the bladder.

I would be interested to hear if this is a common problem, which I hope will cure as the injury cures, but also if he does have to have surgery how long it will likely to be before we can have sex again :(

Thank you.

Pain and dysfunction in the genital area is indeed possible with back problems. First he'll need a full evaluation to see exactly what the cause of his back pain is. Then once you know what levels of the spine are affected often you can look at a spinal dermatome picture/chart that wills show you which level of the back affects which part of the body. If the back problem is significant (disc herniation, severe nerve impingement, etc) then the symptoms you are describing could all result from back problems.

SpineAZ - thank you for your reply, he is having various tests etc as we speak, although saying that the pain killers and anti-inflamatories that he has been on have helped the pain, although they will not cure it I know.

The tests he will be having are like you say, to evaluate the cause etc.

Sometimes we can have sex ok if I am careful, but sometimes he is just too uncomfortable, fairly frustrating for both of us since usually we have a very active sex life.

Of course the bladder problem is also what is upsetting him.

Thanks again.
