pursue a technical job path? Part of the difficulty Rafael is having with this decision is deciding whether to pursue a technical job path or a supervisory path. What r some of the factors Rafael will need to consider?:
"Rafael Jones is a relatively new employee at a pharmaceutical filling plant. He has spent the last 10 months learning the operation as a quality technician. Rafael has a degree in chemistry & is trying to sort out his career options & directions. In his present role, Rafael works closely with a group of 12 employees who r accountable for the production of a major line of capsules. His responsibility is to monitor the reject rate, adherence to specifications, & the sterility testing of the group's production. The company has announced an opening for a production supervisor.
Rafael's relationships with his coworkers have been very good. He is viewed as a solid team player & his background in chemistry has been valuable. Rafael & his coworkers do spend time in lively discussion abt what they would do if they were in charge & asking the question, "What r u thinking abt now?"
Rafael has some fears abt applying for the supervisor's position. He wonders whether he is up to the pressure of the job & whether his career direction should be into management or whether he should be thinking abt advancing in his discipline through an advanced degree. The employees in his present unit have not said anything abt who might be the new supervisor. On the way out of work, Rafael overhears a coworker commenting, "All the new types try to be supervisors, but it rarely works out. " Rafael believes that this decision will be critical to his future."
