Please tell me if I correctly used the comma in these sentences. Tell me if I missed the proper usage in the ones without commas also. Include a very reasonable explanation please -
1)The first Spanish viceroy of Mexico, Antonio de Mendoza, was appointed in 1535.
(The comma is used here because the appositive (Antonio de Mendoza) is not needed in the sentence and is just adding information)
2) This appointment, it appears, established a Spanish colonial government in Mexico for almost three hundred years. (It appears is enclosed in commas because it is a common expression.)
3) Moreover, the Spaniards had sixty-one viceroys in Mexico.
(The conjunctive adverb (moreover) requires a comma because it interrupts the flow of the sentence.)
4) Mexico, you know, was called New Spain then.
(You know is enclosed in commas because it is a common expression that interrupts the flow of the sentence)
5) A series of expeditions adding land to Spain's territory increased the power of Spain in the Americas.(Adding land to Spain's territory is an essential participial to the sentence because it specifies which expeditions. So, it does not require commas.)
6) New Spain included present-day Texas and New Mexico and California. (No comma needed because the conjunction and fills in for the comma)
7) The viceregal system was not, in fact, always a fair one. (Comma used because it is a common expression interrupting the flow of the sentence.)
8) Native Americans were supposed to be free, however, they were treated like slaves. (Comma used because the conjunctive adverb interrupts the sentence.)
9) The most powerful institution in colonial Mexico was, in all probability, the Roman Catholic Church. (Comma used because the common expression interrupts the sentence's flow.)
10) Though those born in Spain were a minority, nevertheless, they occupied positions of power. (Comma used because of the conjunctive adverb interrupting the flow of the sentence.)
