My mother has been having some extremely frightening attacks, which the doctors think are anxiety.
She wakes up and feels she is not able to breathe. She makes this truly awful noise as she attempts to inhale, like stridor or an asthma attack or something, and can't talk at all. After about a minute she starts to be able to breathe again. She is utterly terrified of these attacks. Everything else is normal (heart, blood pressure, etc) and five or ten minutes after an attack her oxygen levels were tested and found to be really good. I am worried that this isn't anxiety and is something that could truly harm her (she has sleep apnoea and, at present, a viral respiratory infection), but since her vitals are all great and the attacks only last a minute I suppose it must just be panic?
Even if the sensation of not breathing is only illusory, it is completely horrendous to her and I don't know how long we can carry on like this. We need help, as quickly as possible.
