Panasonic LX-5: How to load AVCHD files to Mac without the CD-Rom?

I was (I thought) lucky to pick up an open-box Panasonic LX-5 at B&H for a little over $300, which was missing the CD Rom that originally came with the camera. I figured I could download the complicated User Manual online -- and was able to find it, thoug it wasn't so easy.

All seemed OK, until I noticed that when I connected the camera to my MacBookPro, the computer did not recognize the AVCHD "Lite" video at all. The videos recorded in this mode (while visible and playable on the camera Playback) did not appear at all on the index of images available to Load to the computer. The "Motion JPEG" videos came through onto iPhoto as usual.

What can I do to download the AVCHD videos to my Mac without the CD-Rom? I looked online and found several "AVCHD Conversion" softtware downloads, but it was unclear whether these included the Mac download engine itself, and they all seemd to be "Trials" which required buying a program after a month or something.

Suggestions?
Thanks Jim. Appreciate your try but not a solution. I used a card reader to begin with, and then got the (odd) cable that came with the camera in the hope that would work. No. The point is that the photos all appear, and the videos also -- but the AVCHD video files are not visible at all to download onto my computer in iPhoto. There is no "Unreadable File" -- it just does not show these videos as being present on the memory card at all -- either with a card reader, or when the camera is hooked up directly.
