Panasonic DMC FZ8 thinks the lens cap is on and is stuck "zoomed in" HLP!?

exactly what it says ^ ... it is stuck zoomed in and wont zoom out even when I turn it off. this happened when I turned it off without waiting for it to zoom back in. but the good news is that when i turn it on, there is about 5 seconds of blurry unfocused "whatever the camera is pointed at", before this gray sceen comes up telling me to "REMOVE LENS CAP AND PRESS >BUTTON" when I press this button it goes back into blurryness of zoomed in unfocused colours of what ever that camera is pointed at... any help would be appriciated though I have a feeling Ill have to take it to someone to open it up... :( so the camera is not broken (I hope) but just stuck in this mode
