panasonic blu ray surround sound and panasonic hdtv tv?

I can not get surround sound out of my speakers when watching tv, and surround sound/blu ray is on.
If blu ray is off, can get sound through tv speakers. I could not get surround sound option to click on.
so not sure what I had wrong. If I watch dvd I do get sound out of surround speakers, but want to
watch tv through them as well. Thank you.
