Palm's license to expire this December

Hey guys,
It looks like our wait for Palm's next generation OS is about to come to a sad conclusion. Palm has opted out of their license with PalmSource due to a failure to meet certain milestones. Palm may be considering extending OS 5's functionality by themselves but unless they've been working on OS 5 in secret, we have another wait afoot.

You can find the gory details here.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

This just means that because of Access's failure to meet certain deadlines with the next gen of OS commitments - they don't have to pay the Royalties. They have a liscense to operate and continue to use the OS until late in 2009.

And it doesn't preclude that Palm itself can not continue to use the OS after that.

It does mean that Access is abandoning the platform in favor of the ALP "Access Linux Platform" so if Palm wants to tweak the the current version of Garnet (0S 5.4) then they will have every right to do so.

There are several discussions on this at all of the usual sites - PIC, PDAGeek, the old rabroad etc.....so I wouldn't worry too much.

Palm has stated that they will continue to market devices with Garnet for sometime.

It ain't dead yet but it has received a mortal wound that might take awhile to bleed out.
