PalmOne has unveiled the Treo 650, an update to its Treo 600 smart phone that adds a faster processor and higher-resolution screen. Carriers aren't expected to offer the Treo 650 until later this fall in preparation for the holiday season. Along with a 320x320 pixel, 65,000-color screen, the 650 replaces its predecessor's 144MHz processor with a 312MHz core from Intel. An MP3 player and video playback capabilities complement the Treo 650's built-in Bluetooth support. Pricing of the Treo 650 will likely be similar to the 600, which currently runs around $500 USD.

This is CESD's comments on the 650 from the DateBk5 forum. I'm very suprised not only by the small amount of RAM and there's apparently no RAM cache at all. This should make the 650 a very sluggish performer compared to the T5.

As you can tell from the description of the Treo-650, it has the same flash memory as the T5. What bothers me though is there is no reference to any RAM as there is on the T5, so the 32k of memory (23mb of available memory) is all flash. If so, it will have all the same performance problems as the T5 but worse, if there is no Ram cache and so it will definitely need this updated release that I am now working on. I noticed one reviewer talking
about bringing up photos being much slower than the Treo600 - this would be the impact of using flash.

Although the flash memory imposes a significant performance impact, the benefit (no loss of data when the battery goes dead) I think is much more powerful and a real plus that Palm will have over the competition. Yes, us "power user types' just yawn and say what's the big deal in using BackupBuddy or Backupman to restore the data, but for the average user (and remember that fully 50% of those users are below average) the ability to
just plop in a new battery or recharge and do nothing else will be quite compelling...

It sounds though like PalmOne is still trying to get the latest updated code into the 650 (based upon bugs found in the T5), so it's likely that the carriers won't be releasing for several more weeks (and the press release seems to confirm that).

Cheers!

Thank you both. 5.4.5 would be a deal killer for me.

I'm sticking with my plan - get a 2nd spare T3, "Paulize" it, and get on with the task of finding more and better apps to actually help with productivity. There are plenty STILL to look at, and new stuff coming all the time plus constant "improvements" to current apps. TealDoc , Bonsai and AcidImage are shining examples.

This "T5 flurry" has been an interesting ride, full of some SUPER comments from many - but it's time for 'ol PTL to get back to business at hand - defrag, lean and mean, new apps, more "stuff" done, new creative spreadsheets/databases, etc.

I must say that I can still say I'm proud of P1 - after all my "whining in advance" about the T5 and apparently all of it JUSTIFIED, -- the T3 is still the flagship, and a hell of a unit. Let's not forget their successes!!

Now it's once again time to make what "works" do MORE!!
