PalmDesktop crash with T3 use

I am a die hard palm user (Palm Professional, Palm Vx and now T3) My Palm desktop keeps crashing and displays msg:

PALM caused an invalid page fault in
module MFC42.DLL at 0167:5f4040e2.
Registers: etc....

I have tried to re-instal by deleting via control panel and explorer Palm desktop, regedit deleted relevant keys etc. Downloaded the latest Palmdesktop for Windows (98 ) at the PalmOne site etc.

Called the Palm service desk, spent close to one hour going through every imaginable solution and action, to no avail!

When I re-install the desktop software it opens and performs, as soon as I sync my handheld info however, it crashes again. I suspect that there is a corrupt file /info in my handheld which causes trouble when I load the info into the desktop software via Hotsync?

Any ideas and help is appreciated.

It's hard to tell if your problem is coming from Windows or your Palm. I's take a good backup and then move the backup folder to a temporary location. Don't restore, just sync and see if you still get the error. If not, there's a problem with one of the files on your Palm. You can resstore your programs and data one by one and see if you can find the programs that's causing the problem.

Another thought.., you don't happen to be running the Xupiter toolbar in Internet Explorer, do you? This is spyware which is a well known cause for MFC42.DLL errors.

Running a search with Google recommends the following:

To work around this issue, search your hard disk for all instances of the Mfc42.dll file, and if there are multiple instances of this file, rename all of them except the one that is located in the Windows\System folder:

1) Click Start, click Find or Search, and then click Files or Folders.
2) In the Named box, type mfc42.dll.
3) In the Look in box, click Local Hard Drives.
4) Click Find Now.
5) Right-click any Mfc42.dll file that is not in the Windows\System folder, and then click Rename.
6) Type Mfc42.old, and then press ENTER.
7) Repeat step 5 until all instances of the Mfc42.dll file (except the one that is located in the Windows\System folder) are renamed.

You can also try to re-install mfc.dll - I think the latest is version 4.2. Try searching on Google to see if there is a newer version. I did find 4.2 at http://h8300-hms.sourceforge.net/kazu/download/mfc42.exe

Gents,

Thanks for your suggestions which I will put to the test. I have re-installed my Palm Desktop and synchronized all except "Contacts/addressbook" which is the database that crashes the Palm Desktop. Not sure if there is a corrupt segment in the "contact/addressbook" database or any other cause.

Would anyone know what to do if the "contact/addressbook" database is corrupted?

On the handheld the "contact/addressbook" is working well. It all goes wrong when I load it onto the Palm desktop. I can't use the TOOLS option on the Palm desktop software to repair as the desktop crashes as soon as opened.

Hman:confused:

I too had the same problem - fortunately I had an older copy of my datebook.prb to fall back on.

What I found is one or more contacts that had garbage in the notes. Go through each of your contacts and scrutinize the entries to make sure there are no "funny characters" lurking in any of the fields or notes.

If there was a tool available to help with this, that would be wonderful, no?

Cheers!

Jay
