Active Sync (Versamail) will not allow both to be run at the same time. Either you hot sync or you run Active Sync - period.
The Hot Sync functionality is disabled. It can only be re-enabled by deleting the account on the handheld that is set up for Active Sync which results in the loss of data on the handheld for both email and calendar databases - they are virtually wiped. And then you must reinstall the hot sync (the Palm Desktop) on the PC in order to reestablish the conduits. There is a setting on the PC that is changed after the first hot sync with Active Sync enabled (registry settings) so that the email and calendar conduits are disabled permanently until being reestablished by reinstall.
Trust me - it's a royal pain to attempt switching back and forth. Versamail 3.5 was just released but I don't believe this was impacted.
If your client is wishing to be able to walk around their office complex and check email on their secure network then it might be worth setting up Active Sync.
If your client is primarily interested in using non-secure hot spots to connect to the exchange server - then I'd take a different path: I'd recommend if the server has OWA capabilities to set up a pop3 Versamail account. Your client can check their email and reply via a POP3 type of account they will simply not have "exchange" capability. But if you set up the POP3 to ping the exchange server and then set versamail to automatically forward a reply to the user (the client) as well as to the receipient, your client will see this inboud on the exchange as already having been dealt with and can then file it.
TX's aren't real good about connecting to non-secure networks or those that aren't free. The login process sometimes times out......M2C.
