Palm Springs and Palm Desert in California?

We are trying to decide where to spend our 1 week vacation next year.
We were thinking of California.
What do you think of Palm Springs or Palm Desert?
Is it a good place to stay about a week? We have a 3 year old boy who is coming with us.
