Two pro-Second Amendment Democratic senators signaled their support for tougher gun control on Monday in a dramatic sign of a shifting political landscape following the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.
West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, who wielded a hunting rifle in a 2010 campaign ad, was the first to suggest a change of heart on Monday morning.
He was followed by Virginia Sen. Mark Warner, who said “enough is enough” during an interview with Richmond’s CBS affiliate.
“I believe every American has Second Amendment rights, the ability to hunt is part of our culture. I’ve had an NRA rating of an ‘A’ but, you know, enough is enough,” said Warner, whose state suffered its own mass tragedy in 2007, when a gunman opened fire at Virginia Tech.
Warner said he believes “reasonable folks in both parties” and the “overwhelming majority of Americans” agree that there should be “stricter (gun control) rules on the books.”
Manchin, who also boasts an “A” rating from the NRA, suggested he may favor limits on high-capacity magazines and consider other limits on assault weapons.
