The paint on my boat is old and ugly and im considering repainting it. There is a black tarlike bottom coat on the outside of the hull, im guessing some sort of antifouling coat? Or is it just to make the hull of the boat more durable against scrapes, knicks, and dings? Im sanding down the whole boat with acetone by hand to be sure nothing is damaged (acetone is the only thing that takes off the black stuff). So far so good. Now i know i should use a paint "kit" with primers recommended for the paint and whatnot, and know i need to fill any gaps with fiberglass filler, and bondo the scrapes.
The question being, is there a specific kind of paint i should use for a small boat like that. The boat wont be kept in the water for prolonged periods (30 - 40 hrs at a time tops). Can i use a good durable topcoat for the whole boat, or should i still use a top coat for the top and a bottom coat for the bottom of the hull? Im sure the paint will tell me weather or not i need to clear coat, but should i re roll a black tar coating deal on the bottom of the hull after its all painted, or will it be ok with just the paint?
So its fine just to paint it with the bottom side coating and leave the paint be as long as its a good durable bottom coat correct? And since its a small 12 foot fishing boat should i continue the bottomside paint up onto the sides of the hull? It is a shallow boat and theres only a couple feet above the waterline.
