Painted hetmi crab shells at petco?

okay so i went to petco the other day. and the Hermit crabs looked in great condition and had a lot of space! But anyways, there was only 1 hermit crab i saw in a non painted shell, there was also other shells in there empty that were painted to. And all of the crabs were active, digging, talking. And there was no dead crabs.

So were the crabs forced into thoes shells or did they go inside them themselves?
 
they prolly went in by themselves, i dont think anyone could force them or otherwise,the ppl forcing them wil get pinched. lol :D
