Paint splashing jeans?

I want to get a pair of jeans to cut off at the knee and splash paint on for a present for my friend (Im thinking forward to christmas, and as a 14 year old short on cash, I'm trying cheap ideas). I already have the paint, but I want to make sure the paint doesn't run or come out in the wash somehow, how could I make sure that doesn't happen? Something like Mod Podge, or is that completely off?
Also, do think that the idea of paint splashed jeans is tacky or 'last year'? My friend is the kind of person who I know would probably like it anyway, but what do you think?
 
I think it's kind of tacky, maybe your opinion is different, but think of it this way: would you wear home-made paint splashed jeans that a friend made? It's the thought that counts..but i wouldn't wear them. But if it's something your friend would like for sure, then go ahead and do it..it's a different idea. If not, just buy her like a gift card for $10 to a makeup store or something like that.
