Painful Repair

I consider myself a 3 or 4 on a scale of 10 for being mechanically inclined but from start to finish, I was probably about 30 minutes also or perhaps even a bit less and that was with putting it in upside down the 1st time. Maybe I'll move myself up to a 4 or 5 on the scale. I did take the other lid off at the same time to have an example sitting right there and did the job in my family room on a rugged floor.

Congrat. OP for saving yourself probably about an hour of H-D shop time plus shop supplies for the install of a $1 part. Even if it did take 4 hours, you probably saved $80-100 or $20-$25 buck an hour.

How can that spring break ? the number of coils for the total length of linear movement of the ends radius is less than 1/2 of the total expansion ! Geeeeeze......maybe it's the Jap steel ?

I'm still trying to figure out how the hell ya break em in the 1st. Opened and closed mine on my 01 EG bout a gazillion times with no problem. Took the lids and latches off to get them painted bout 15 minutes each.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

Took mine back to the dealer under warrenty because the latch suddenly felt really different. I figured it was the spring. took the bag off and they took it into the shop. Ten minutes later he calls me back in the shop and says there was nothing wrong with it, said it was normal to be like that. It felt nothing like the other side. The spring only had one arm on it i thought it was suspose to have two. I was in a hurry so I just left. Whatever!

The damn things just break.Must have replaced about 5 so far.

They have two arms.
The most recent springs I bought were different than the old ones that I replaced. The arms have a bend in them.
