Hey all,

I know I have tried to ask this before and I have tried to research it but never really got anywhere. Every morning after only about 3-4 hours of sleep, 5 hours absolute maximum, I wake up because of my pain. It is so bad. It hurts so much that I cannot take a proper breath, my breathing is very, very shallow due to pain. Yesterday I woke up and I was in so much pain, I went to roll over to get out of bed and it literally felt as though my spine had punctured my appendix or intestines, it was the lowest part on my stomach on he right side. I was pretty scared. On top of my usual pain I had this too. it was awful! I never want to experience that again. As far as my mornings go, the pain wakes me up, it can take me 15 minutes just to get out of bed, I have to get up (as painful as it really is) and move around but first and foremost I have to get my meRAB in me), then I have to walk around and it slowly goes away and I have my usual pain that lasts all day and it gets worse as the day goes on.

Has anyone ever experienced this? It's EVERY morning for me. Most of you probably know my history but to sum it up very briefly, I have a very long history of back problems and have already been through 2 major spine surgeries, I am currently waiting for my third surgery. I have lurabar lordosis, spodylolthesis, sciatica in my right side and recently it's been getting a lot worse in my left side. I don't really know what's going on with my spine right now. But in the past I have had, spondy with fractures all throughout my lurabar region, 2 slipped disc with one replacement, the replacement disc is currently broken and that's why I am waiting for my next surgery (plus it's exploratory, my surgeon will fix whatever he sees and can fix), going into my first surgery I had crushed nerves like my surgeon had never seen before, and the list goes on.

I am very anxious to find someone that knows exactly what I am talking about. I know there must be someone out there that has the same problem. It can't be that rare if I am experiencing this. Please respond if you are someone that has expereinced this and or if you know of someone who had this problem.

Please help!

I end up with the breathing thing, I can't straighten up, and I have burning extending from the lurabar area to the mid section of my back. I am asking for an MRI because I believe something is going on possibly in the Thoracic area. Do you have problems with this area by chance? Have they scanned this area?

Have you been checked for sleep apnea ? That can make you stop breathing in your sleep. People with chronic pain have it alot. Also I would wake up and could not catch my breath when I was hurting the doctor put me on Xananx at bedtime it really seems to help. I take 1 mg. Talk to them and see if he is willing to do a trial period for you it can't hurt and it might just relax you enough to help with the pain alittle, it does me.

Good luck and keep us posted.:)

Your not alone honey there are alot of us out there like you. I myself Have had luraber laminectomy with roRAB and screws cemented disc's due to degenertive disc disease in my early thirty's. When I go to bed at night I sleep on my side and I can only stay on one side for a short period before the pain wakes me up and forces me to roll over to the other side, so I too don't sleep well. I currently have some bulging and central disc protrusion at L3 & L4 so it won't be long before I'm back on the cutting table again.

But what I do in the mornings, because I can't move until after my pain meRAB are already in my system I set my alarm clock for 1 hour before I have to get up ( I use my cell phone it has 3 alarms on it ) and I take my pain meRAB this way when I get up they are in my system and it makes it so much easier to put my feet on the floor and make it through another day. I don't know what meRAB. you are on but I'm on 10 mgs. of lortab 3 x day plus muscle relaxers and anti-inflam. also 3 x day. This works for me maybe it will help you in the mornings.
Good luck

You are definitely not alone. My husband wakes me up and brings me a glass of water and my pill every morning at 4:00. Then I go back to sleep and wake up around 8. My pain is so bad in the morning that it takes me close to 2 hours to eat, shower and get dressed. I have to recline with heat/ice many mornings. I could not imagine what my pain would be like if I did not take that medication at 4:00 am.

Breathtaking back pain has woken me up early in the morning for the past 4 years and just came on me suddenly without warning. I have a herniated disk L5-S1 that never gave me a bit of trouble before this started. Fortunately (and sort of oddly too), that is my only symptom. I have rare days when I have pain during the day, but mostly I am pain free.

I cannot tell you for sure what might be causing this in your case, I only know what I have done to shift the wake up time from 3 am to 6 am which is certainly an improvement, although I still wake up in pain and would like another hour or two of sleep. I am a side-sleeper and I find that my spine sags in the middle when I sleep because I am a woman and well...women have hips! At first I slept on a rolled up towel, but I found a legitimate lurabar pillow for side-sleeper at the back store and now I use that. A physical therapist told me to do this. It really does help decompress the vertebrae. The goal is to keep your spine in a perfect line. Test out some things. (I've even sewn my own pillows with buckwheat in them before I found the pillow at the store.) Lay on your towel or pillow and have someone look at your spine to make sure it is a perfect line.

The problem is that we relax and become paralyzed in positions during sleep and this exacerbates problems we already have.

I will be posting shortly to ask this board about what I can do next. While my pain is better than when I was waking up at 3 am, I still hate the thought of living like this for the rest of my life.

Hey all,

thanks for reading and responding. That's a really good idea. I think I will try to set my phone for a good hour prior to getting up. THe problem is I don't know when I am going to wake up with this "breath taking" problem. It is really, really bad. I mean, I have my pain all day and it gets worse and better and so on but this pain in the am is totally crazy. I just can't describe it as well as I should. But it is incredibly intense. It's not just regular back pain or really bad back pain, something is going on in there and I just don't know what it is. Like, I cannot move! I swear it, literally cannot move. I just don't understand why this happens and why does it affect my breathing. What on earth is going on in there that would make it do this to me?!? I don't get it. I really wish someone could explain why this happens. It seems the doctors don't know/understand.
I am so afaid that I am not going to get fixed either. My surgeon said that this 3rd surgery would be the last on. Due to all the scar tissue and nerves, my surgeon feels it's to risky to go further. He also said that he may not be able to do what he neeRAB to because of the scar tissue and nerves that are in the way. He may see something that neeRAB to be fixed but cannot take the risk to fix it! It's scary. I have myself so worked up about it all.

I will set my phone, keep my water by my bed as well as my meRAB. I am on oxycodone, gabapentin (for nerves), clonazepam, fentanyl pain patch and of course T3's for extra pain management and or advil.

Thanks again for all the help. I really appreciate that you guys took the time to help out ;)

It there is anyone that knows why this is happening and what is going on in there that is causing this, I would be so incredibly grateful for any help you can offer.

Take care all,
Beachgirl
